A “couch potato” is a creature whose favorite habitat is a comfortable sofa with an unobstructed view of the television. Today we talk about a little device that has played a large role in encouraging the spread of this sedentary species!

  • A remote control is a small piece of equipment that you hold in your hand and use to adjust (for example, turn on/off, turn up/down, or change the channel on) another piece of equipment (such as a TV or stereo) that is not attached to it.

Be Careful! The shortened form of remote control is remote, NOT “remocon” like the Japanese

  1. (on the phone with her husband)
Can you pick up some batteries for the remote control? It takes four AAA (pronounced “triple A”) batteries.
  2. I don't know what half the buttons on this remote control are for.
  3. I can't find the remote. Do you have it?
  4. Give me the remote. I want to see what else is on (= on TV).

英会話レッスンWe'll be back here on this same channel tomorrow. So don't touch that dial ... or that remote control!
