2012.02.16 (Review of 2008.12.10 edition)
"I'd rather be ..." bumper stickers were all the rage a while ago. With slogans like "I'd rather be surfing," "I'd rather be ballroom dancing," or "I'd rather be quilting," they're a way for people to identify themselves with their favorite form of play rather than with their work.
By the way, the "business" we're introducing you to today is NOT the countable noun used in sentences like "I've started a hardware business." Read well!
BUSINESS OR PLEASURE 仕事 or 娯楽
- Business (uncountable) is something you do because it is part of your job, not because you (necessarily) enjoy it.
Pleasure (uncountable) is something you do because you enjoy it, not because you have to. - business は、(必ずしも)楽しいからではなく、やるべきだからすること、つまり、仕事のことです。不可算名詞です。
pleasure は、しなければならないからではなく、楽しいからすること、つまり、娯楽のことです。これも不可算名詞です。
- a: Where's Gary?
b: He's away on business for a couple of days. - How do I get reimbursed for a business lunch with a client?
- (immigration officer to passenger at airport)
Are you traveling for business or pleasure? - In the U.S., they often say you shouldn't mix business with pleasure, but I like the Japanese way better.
- (a busy executive)
I seldom have time to read for pleasure these days.
