Greetings! We hope you're refreshed and ready for adventure after this latest three-day weekend. We're following up on Coming of Age Day (成人の日) by considering what adulthood can mean in practical terms. Along with the right to vote and license to liquor up, come some rather more sobering financial responsibilities as well.
PAY THE BILLS 生活費を稼ぐ
- If you pay the bills, you earn the money necessary to pay for housing, electricity, insurance premiums, etc.
If a job pays the bills, it provides the income necessary to pay for such expenses. - pay the bills は、住宅費、電気代、保険料などの支払いに必要なお金を稼ぐ、という意味です。
仕事について pay the bills と言うと、そのような経費の支払いに必要な収入を提供する、という意味になります。
- With five kids, I have to work two jobs just to pay the bills.
- He makes a good salary - enough to pay the bills, save up for a down payment on a house, and have some left to enjoy himself with.
- My job isn't very exciting, but it pays the bills.
