“Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure nineteen nineteen and six, result happiness. Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure twenty pounds ought and six, result misery.”
This famous advice given by Wilkins Micawber to David Copperfield in the Charles Dickens novel of the same name nicely illustrates the principle that you cannot spend more than you earn and expect to do well. This advice applies equally to business, especially if you add the following corollary: you cannot sell an item for less than you paid for it and expect to succeed. In other words, to make it in business, you must make a “profit”!
