There's a cost to keeping a roof over your head.

Today's Lesson

Explanation

  • Overhead refers to the regular and continuing costs of running a business that are not directly connected to the production or sale of a business's goods or services. This includes costs such as rent, gas and electricity, maintenance, and insurance, but NOT the cost of labor, materials, or administration.

examples

  1. We're always looking for new ways to keep our overhead low. For example, by switching to an Internet phone service, we were able to save about $600 a month in long distance charges.
  2. If you were to weatherproof your office and switch to energy-efficient LED lighting, you could probably reduce your annual overhead by about 10%.
  3. I pay about $5000 a month to rent my space at the mall. Jessica, on the other hand, is a freelance writer working out of her home and has almost no overhead costs.
