If you're like many of us, you may find it difficult to believe that another year is about to end. Time just keeps speeding along, doesn't it? Now, they say that to consider the passage of time on occasion helps to shape character and set priorities. So this week, we take “Time” as our theme. Hopefully, by the end of Friday, we'll all have a little more of it!

Explanation

  • To do something first thing is to do it right away, before anything else.
  • do something first thing と言うと、あることを何よりも先にすぐにする、という意味です。

  1. (on a cell phone)
    a: I just drove my car into a snow bank, and it's stuck good.
    b: I'll call my mechanic and have him send a tow truck first thing. Where are you?
  2. If I don't take care of correspondence first thing in the morning, it's hard to find time for it later in the day.
  3. The movers are coming first thing tomorrow, so all employees need to have their things packed up and ready by the end of the day.
  4. a: Do you have time to look this draft over? It's rather urgent.
    b: Sure. I can do it first thing after lunch.
