There are times when it seems this kind of “sense” has become anything but common!

Today's LessonCATEGORY:

  • Common sense is the ability to make good, practical decisions that require no special knowledge.

Be Careful! We do NOT use the expression common sense like the Japanese 常識 to mean INFORMATION that most people are expected to have, such as the name of Japan's highest mountain or how to buy a subway ticket.

  1. Nobody should let a child play with a gun. It's just common sense.
  2. a: I had to sit next to someone on the train this morning who was putting on makeup, eating French fries, and having a loud conversation on her cell phone.
b: Young people just don't have any common sense these days!
a: Well, actually, she was probably in her fifties.
  3. Don't count your money with all these people around - it's not safe! Use some common sense!
  4. He's a smart guy and would make a good manager if he just had more common sense.
