Welcome, to Berlitz WordMaster for the second week of June - as in “June bride!” Yes, during this most popular month for weddings, we thought a series relating to that happiest of ceremonies might be welcome. So here's a set of WordMasters inspired by the defining act in any wedding - the “I do!”
PROMISE 約束する、約束
- To promise (verb) to do something is to say that you will surely do it.
A promise (noun) is such a statement. - 動詞の promise とは、必ずすると言うこと、つまり、約束する、という意味です。
名詞の promise は、そのような宣言、つまり、約束のことです。
- (during a wedding ceremony)
PRIEST: Do you promise to love her in sickness and in health until death do you part (= as long as you live)?
GROOM: I do! - I promised the kids that I'd take them to the amusement park this Sunday. They've been looking forward to it all week.
- a: Mark would be very upset if he found out. Promise me you won't say anything.
b: I promise. - a: I'm afraid that I won't be able to make it to the party, after all.
b: But you promised! - a: What's this?
b: It's a written promise to pay back the money I owe you by the 1st of August. - The CEO made a promise to every employee that he would bring the company out of this crisis.
