Today's LessonCATEGORY:

  • You can use the expression my own, if something belongs to you or if you did it yourself.

Be Careful! We usually do NOT use expressions such as “MY car” or “MY home” - like the Japanese マイカー and マイホーム - when talking about other people's things or things we don't have yet. Instead of saying, for example, “Do you have MY car?” or “I've always wanted MY home,” we can say “Do you have YOUR OWN car?” or “I've always wanted MY OWN home.”

Do you have MY car? や、I've always wanted MY home. Do you have YOUR OWN car? または、I've always wanted MY OWN home.

  1. RON: I'm creating my own Web site. I'm going to call it “Ron's Space”.
  2. (two schoolchildren)
Hey, that's my eraser! Get your own.
  3. (teenage girl)
I'm going to miss this old house after we move. But I amlooking forward to finally having my own room.
  4. My dream is to have a little coffee shop of my own someday.
  5. He lives in a log cabin he built himself and makes all his own furniture.
