2007.09.25(Review of 2004.06.07 edition)
Greetings!
We've only time for three new @Work editions this week before the @Work Challenge, and we'd be hard pressed to tell you what the theme is. But these three expressions just seemed to complement one another. Enjoy!
SPARK (OFF) 誘発する
- To spark or spark off something - especially intense, excited, or angry activity - is to cause it to begin.
- spark または spark off は、(特に、緊迫した事態や、感情を高ぶらせたり、怒りを伴ったりする行為など)何かを引き起こす、という意味です。
- (city councilman urging for construction of proposed bridge)
We believe that construction of the bridge will spark growth in bay communities. - Rumors of coming layoffs have sparked a great deal of concern among the employees.
- (fictional news report)
One of the world's most successful investors has sparked a bidding war among publishers by announcing plans to write an investment advice book. - A chemical spill threatening the water supply has sparked off protests by local residents and a massive sell-off of the company's stock.
- The prefecture's recent boom in tourism was sparked off by a popular movie filmed in the area.
We hope we've sparked your interest regarding the rest of this week's editions. See you again tomorrow?
