For Life

Hello again! It's another merry Monday, which means the start of a new theme. This week we look at those moments in life that humble us and make us turn red in the face. With a sense of humor and a little loosening of our pride, it should be a very enjoyable week!

Today's LessonCATEGORY: 間違いやすいボキャブラリー
(MAKE A) MISTAKE   間違い、失敗(をする)

  • A mistake (noun) is a wrong or unfortunate action or its result.

To make a mistake is to do such an action.

Be Careful! You MAKE a mistake - you don't “DO a mistake”. Also, in most cases, we don't use the word “mistake” alone as a verb, as in the sentence “I hope I don't mistake on the test.”
  • mistake (名詞)とは、間違った行為や残念な行為、またはその結果、つまり、間違い、失敗、という意味です。

    make a mistake は、そうした行為をする、つまり、間違いをする、失敗をする、ということです。

    注意:英語では DO a mistake ではなく、MAKE a mistake と言います。また、I hope I don't mistake on the test. のように、mistake を動詞として単独で使うこともほとんどありません。

  1. a: Taking that job was a mistake. I should have known I'd be unhappy in such a high-pressure office environment.
b: Well, the important thing is that you learn from your mistakes.
  2. It was a big mistake to sell the house when we did. Prices have risen 40% since then.
  3. I found a few spelling and grammar mistakes in your paper. I circled them in red for you.
  4. (on the phone with a customer in Australia)
I'm sorry, but we made a mistake on your order and shipped it to Austria instead of Australia.
  5. a: How was your piano recital?
b: I made a few mistakes, but I think it went alright.
