For Life

We're spending this week in the kitchen, giving a name to objects commonly found there. Because each of these objects has a “katakana” name that sounds like English, you may think you already know what to call them. If so, this should be a week full of surprises for you. Enjoy!

PAPER TOWEL   ペーパータオル

  • A paper towel is a thick piece of paper used for drying and cleaning, especially in the kitchen.

Be Careful! In the United States, we usually do NOT use the expression “kitchen towel”(キッチンタオル) to mean paper towel.

  1. (spilling a drink on the floor at a party)
    GUEST: Oh, I'm so sorry!
HOST: It's alright. I'll get some paper towels.
  2. These new paper towels really soak up water fast, don't they?
  3. (demonstrating a new glass cleaner)
Just spray a little on the glass, wipe with a paper towel, and look how clean your windows become!
  4. You won't have to worry about hot oil splattering if you dry the fish lightly with a paper towel before frying it.
  5. (part of a recipe)
Drain the cooked bacon on a paper towel, then crumble on top of the salad.
