Many people are aware that water plays an important role in chemistry, geology, and biology. But did you know that water has made an important contribution to the English language as well?   • To test the water or waters is to find out more about something by doing a survey, trying it first on a smaller scale, etc. before deciding whether or not to do it.
  • test the water(s) とは、何かをするかどうか決断する前に、調査をしたり、まず小規模に試してみたりすることによってよりよく知る、つまり試してみるという意味です。


  1. Before we commit ourselves to a nationwide sales campaign, let's test the water locally first and see what kind of response we get.
  2. For someone who is having trouble making a career decision, doing an internship is a great way to test the water.
  3. We were both a little anxious about the idea of marriage, so we thought we'd test the waters by living together first.
