2006.09.04(Review of 2004.12.09 edition)
Greetings and felicitations! It's great to be starting another week with you!
It goes without saying that the WordMaster@Work team has great respect for the power of words. So let's spend a few days looking at various approaches to using this power. We begin by setting the tone for the week with the following useful expression!
SET THE TONE ~の雰囲気を作る
- Something or someone can set the tone if they create a particular mood that continues for a period of time, such as throughout an activity.
We also use the pattern “set a + ADJECTIVE + tone” to describe the specific kind of mood that is created. - set the tone は、しばらくの間、または、会合などの間じゅう続くような、ある雰囲気を作り出す、という意味です。
ある特定の雰囲気を作り出す、と言いたいときには、“set a + 形容詞 + tone” というパターンを使います。
- The opening remarks were light and humorous, which set the tone for the entire workshop.
- My son Michael got sick on the day we arrived, and unfortunately that set the tone for the rest of our vacation. We were all quite happy to get back home.
- It's important that we set a friendly tone at tonight's meeting. So remember to wear your smiles and keep everyone's glasses full.
Thanks for coming! Have a great day!
