Explanation

  • To fire someone is to order them to leave their job because of unsatisfactory work or bad behavior.

    To lay off somebody is to stop employing them - often temporarily - because the organization is having financial problems or because the job is no longer necessary.

    A layoff is the act of laying off one or more employees.
  • fire は、仕事ができないとか勤務態度が悪いという理由で解雇する、という意味です。

    動詞の lay off は、従業員の雇用の継続をやめる、という意味です。企業の財政難や、仕事そのものがもはや必要でなくなったなどの理由によるものです。

    名詞の layoff は、(一人、またはそれ以上の従業員の)解雇、という意味です。
