Although these two expressions could be considered twins, they're not identical twins. Make sure that you can tell them apart!
(RISE/MOVE UP) THROUGH THE RANKS vs. CLIMB THE CORPORATE LADDER
昇進していく vs. 出世街道を進む(特に企業で)
- To rise through the ranks or move up through the ranks is to advance in an organization (a company, a university, the government, etc.) over time by getting better and better positions.
To climb the corporate ladder is to move up through the ranks in a COMPANY. - rise through the ranks あるいは move up through the ranks とは、企業や大学、政府などの組織において、徐々により良い地位を得て昇進していく、という意味です。
特に、企業において、平社員から高い地位へのぼりつめていくことを climb the corporate ladder と言います。

b: The old-fashioned way. He started in the mailroom and gradually rose through the ranks. - It'll probably take me 7 to 10 years to move up through the ranks at the university and get tenure (= a permanent teaching position).
