2006.03.03(Review of 2003.09.08 edition)
Hello, and welcome to the Friday edition of WordMaster@Work!
Sometimes all you need to do to express your opinion is to give the thumbs up or thumbs down. But since this is WordMaster - not GestureMaster - we'll teach you how to SAY what you think instead!
IN FAVOR OF / OPPOSED TO
~に賛成して/~に反対である
- To be in favor of a plan or idea is to support it or agree with it.
To be opposed to a plan or idea is to disagree with it. - in favor of は、計画や考えを支持する、それに賛成する、という意味です。
opposed to は、計画や考えに異議を唱える、つまり、反対する、という意味です。
- Nearly every employee in the company is in favor of the new dress policy. It's sure to be approved.
- Although I voted in favor of the merger at first, I am now strongly opposed to it. I think it would be a terrible mistake.
- The union is opposed to the proposed wage cut and is threatening to strike if it is approved.
- How can you be opposed to hiring temps and yet complain about all the overtime you have to work?
All in favor of breaking for the weekend, raise your hand!
