2006.08.29
Greetings! Enjoying the summer heat? Well, things are about to get even hotter, because the WordMaster is back!
LIE (on the beach) (浜に)横たわる
- To lie is to be in a horizontal position (for example, on your back, stomach, or side) on a bed, a beach, etc.
Be Careful! The past tense of lie is lay, NOT “lied”. - lie とは、ベッドや浜などで、体を地面に平行にする、(例えば、仰向けになる、腹ばいになる、あるいは、横向きに寝そべる)つまり、横たわる、という意味です。
注意:lie の過去形は、lay です。lied ではありません。
- There are few things I enjoy more than lying on the beach with a good book.
- On the weekend, I'll sometimes lie in bed until noon reading or watching TV.
- a: Do you lie on your back, stomach, or side when you sleep?
b: All three; I move around a lot. - Do you ever lie awake at night thinking about what you have to do the next day?
- (a doctor to a patient)
Please lie down on the examination table while I check you over. - I was so tired after our hike! I fell asleep almost as soon as I lay down.
All the best to you today!
