2006.07.27(Review of 2003.09.24 edition)
Welcome once again to Berlitz WordMaster's continuing travelogue! Here's a “postcard” from overseas to keep you dreaming of adventure!
ABROAD 外国で、外国へ(に)
- Abroad means in or to a foreign country.
Be Careful[1]! When you use the word abroad, the country you are talking about does NOT necessarily have to be overseas.
Be Careful[2]! We do NOT say “IN abroad”, “TO abroad”, etc. - abroad は、外国で、外国へ(に)、という意味です。
注意[1]:abroad という単語を使うとき、必ずしも海外(海を越える国)をさすとは限りません。
注意[2]:in や to をつけて、“IN abroad”、“TO abroad” のようには言いません。
- (two Swiss high school students)
a: Have you ever been abroad?
b: Yes, but just to Germany and France. What about you?
a: We flew to Canada last year. It was fantastic! - My dream is to live abroad someday.
- These days, it's not unusual for university students to spend a year studying abroad.
- (someone living in the United States)
I'd like to go abroad this year. Maybe I'll spend Christmas in England.
Tomorrow is a Challenge Friday, so get lots of rest tonight!
