  • In the United States, apple juice is sometimes called apple cider or sweet cider, especially raw apple juice with the pulp (= the meat of the apple) still in it. Hard cider is fermented apple juice (= apple juice that contains alcohol produced by yeast or bacteria).

Be Careful! If you want one of the sweet, clear, carbonated drinks known as サイダー, use the brand name. We do NOT call such drinks cider in English.

  1. WAITER: Can I get you something to drink?
    CUSTOMER #1: I'll have a cola.
CUSTOMER #2: And I'd like a glass of apple cider, please.
  2. (serving a soft drink to a guest at your home)
Here, I think you'll like this. It's sparkling (= carbonated) sweet cider from Vermont.
  3. My favorite pub meal in England was steak-and-kidney pie with a pint of hard cider.
