Explanation

  • In the United States, apple juice is sometimes called apple cider or sweet cider, especially raw apple juice with the pulp (= the meat of the apple) still in it. Hard cider is fermented apple juice (= apple juice that contains alcohol produced by yeast or bacteria).

    Be Careful! If you want one of the sweet, clear, carbonated drinks known as サイダー, use the brand name. We do NOT call such drinks cider in English.
  • アメリカでは、りんごから作ったジュース、特に、果肉が残ったままの生のりんごジュースのことを apple cider または sweet cider ということがあります。hard cider は、りんごジュースを発酵させて作るりんご酒のことで、これは、酵母や細菌の働きによって発生するアルコールを含むものです。

    注意:日本語で「サイダー」と呼ばれているような、甘くて無色透明な炭酸飲料が飲みたければ、商品名を言いましょう。英語では、この種の飲み物を cider とは呼びません。
