Wednesday! It's a great day to learn a little English, don't you agree?

Today's LessonCATEGORY:
WAKE UP vs. GET UP   目覚める vs. 起床する

Explanation

  • As we explained in yesterday's WordMaster edition, “AWAKE / WAKE UP”, to wake up is to stop sleeping or to make someone stop sleeping.

To get up is to get out of bed.

To get someone up is to make them get out of bed.

Be Careful! You can say “wake up someone” AND “wake someone up”. Either word order is correct. But you can ONLY say “get someone up”, NOT “get up someone”.

けれども、get someone up の代わりに get up someone という表現は使いません。

examples

  1. I always wake up at 6:00 a.m., but sometimes I don't actually get up until 6:15 or 6:30.
  2. (a mother to her son still lying in bed)
You'd better get up or you'll be late for school.
  3. After I get the kids up, make them breakfast, and get them off to school, I like to relax with the paper and a cup of coffee.
