A lot of people confuse global warming with the environmental problem we're introducing in today's edition. After today, you should have no problem keeping the two straight!

Today's Lesson
OZONE (LAYER/DEPLETION)   オゾン層/オゾン層破壊

Explanation

  • The ozone layer is an amount of ozone (a gas) about 15 to 30 kilometers above the earth's surface. It protects the earth from dangerous UV light from the sun.

Ozone depletion is the decrease - caused by certain manmade substances - in the amount of ozone in the ozone layer.

examples

  1. In parts of the world where the ozone layer is thin, doctors recommend that you wear sunscreen, a hat, long-sleeved clothes, and long pants anytime you're outside.
  2. Most countries have agreed to stop producing many of the chemicals that damage the ozone layer.
  3. They say that ozone depletion is worst over the Antarctic, where there is a huge hole in the ozone layer during part of the year.
