  • A sailboat is a small boat with sails.

A yacht is a larger, usually expensive boat with sails and/or a motor. It often has beds, a kitchen, a toilet, etc. for longer journeys.

Be Careful! We don't usually use the word yacht like the Japanese ヨット to talk about smaller, less expensive sailboats.

  1. I plan to use my summer bonus this year to buy a sailboat.
  2. My dream is to win the lottery, buy a yacht, and sail around the world.
  3. The wealthy businessman celebrated his birthday along with 15 guests on board his 20-meter yacht.
