Today's Lesson
SUNK COST   サンク・コスト、埋没原価

Explanation

  • A sunk cost is money spent which cannot be recovered; for example, the cost of a magazine advertisement that is already in print.
  • sunk cost とは、既に支出してしまい、回収のできないお金のことで、例えば印刷済みの雑誌広告の費用などのことを言います。

examples

  1. According to economic theory, sunk costs should not be considered when making future decisions.
(See Example #2 for an example of how this reasoning works.)
  2. Regret over sunk costs often keeps people from pulling out of unsuccessful business ventures sooner.
  3. (giving instructions to an employee)
I want you to list up the cost of each option and the potential benefits. Of course, ignore any sunk costs we've already incurred.
