Welcome back to the world of Berlitz WordMaster! As the summer quickly approaches, we find ourselves spending more and more time outside (at least when rain clouds don't loom). And here's one of our favorite places to relax and watch the world go by!

  • A cafe is a restaurant where you can buy drinks (usually coffee, tea, and other drinks without alcohol) and small, simple meals.

    A sidewalk cafe is a cafe with seats outside.

    Be Careful! “Open cafe” 「オープンカフェ」 is Japanese-English.
  • cafe とは、飲み物(通常はコーヒーや紅茶などの、アルコールの入っていないもの)や簡単な食事を出す、レストランの一種です。

    sidewalk cafe とは、屋外に席のある cafe のことです。

    注意:open cafe 「オープンカフェ」は和製英語です。


  1. My wife and I met at a cafe in Manhattan. She was having a cappuccino and a bagel, and I was having a double espresso.
  2. My favorite way to spend a Sunday afternoon is at a sunny sidewalk cafe with a good book.
  3. The Champs Elysees in Paris is famous for its fashionable sidewalk cafes, and the people-watching there is world-class.
