Welcome back! It's good to hear your voice again! (We can imagine, can't we?)

Today's Lesson
DIAL (a phone number)   電話をかける

Explanation

  • To dial a number is to make a telephone call by turning a telephone dial (= a disc with numbers on it) or by using a keypad (= a set of buttons with numbers on them).
  • dial a number とは、電話のダイヤル(回転式の数字盤のこと)を回したり、押しボタン(数字の書いてあるボタン)を押して電話をかける、という意味です。

examples

  1. In an emergency, dial 110 for the police.
  2. (a recording heard in the U.S. when you dial a number that is no longer being used)
The number you have dialed is not in service. Please check the number and dial again.
  3. You can make a reservation at the hotel by dialing toll-free (= the call is free) at xxxx-xxxx.
  4. To make an international call by dialing direct, first dial the international access code, then dial the country code, area code, and finally the number itself. Or you can dial the operator and have him or her place the call for you.

英会話レッスンWe'll be sure to dial your number again tomorrow. If the phone rings, you know who it is!
