Today's LessonCATEGORY: 混同しやすい言葉
(go) ACROSS vs. CROSS   を渡って vs. 渡る

Explanation

  • Across means “from one side to the other”.

To cross something is to GO from one side to the other.

Be Careful! Across is NOT a verb, so we cannot say, for example, “I across the street.” We have to say, “I CROSS the street,” or “I GO ACROSS the street,” “I WALK ACROSS the street,” etc.
  • across とは、「片側から反対側へ」という意味です。

    cross は片側から反対側へ行く、という行動を表します。

注意:across は動詞ではないので、 I across the street. というような使い方はできません。 I CROSS the street. または I GO ACROSS the street. や I WALK ACROSS the street. などの表現を使います。

examples

  1. It's a busy street, so look both ways before you walk across.
  2. Look both ways before you cross.
  3. After you drive across the bridge, you'll be in Manhattan.
  4. After you cross the bridge, you'll be in Manhattan.
  5. (a well-known joke)
Q: Why did the chicken cross the road?
A: To get to the other side!
