More on diapers today! (Given that the average mother will have to put on and take off over 9000 diapers before her baby is old enough to go to the toilet by himself, two days about diapers doesn't seem unreasonable, does it?)

Today's Lesson
WET A DIAPER / CHANGE A DIAPER   オムツを ぬらす/替える

Explanation

  • When a baby wets a diaper, the baby causes the diaper to become wet with urine (= a yellowish liquid released from the body).

To change a diaper is to take off a wet or dirty diaper and put on a dry, clean one.
  • wet a diaper は、おしっこでオムツをぬらす、という意味です。

    change a diaper は、ぬれた、または、汚れたオムツをはずし、乾いたきれいなオムツをつける――つまり、オムツを取り替える、という意味です。

examples

  1. Little Annie always cries when she wets her diaper.
  2. I had to get up in the middle of the night to change Johnny's wet diaper.
  3. a: Something smells (= smells bad).
b: The baby's diaper probably needs to be changed.
