For Life
2004.05.24

Greetings! We're taking to the skies this week! The talk will be about airplanes and exotic destinations ... and all the confusion about time that results from such journeys. Sometimes it seems that jet airliners are part transport machine, part time machine!

Today's Lesson
DEPARTURE TIME / ARRIVAL TIME   出発時刻/到着時刻

Explanation

  • Departure time  is the time that an airplane leaves the airport to begin its flight.

Arrival time  is the time that an airplane gets to the airport at the end of its flight.

Of course, we can also use these expressions to talk about trains, busses, ships, etc.

examples

  1. PASSENGER: When does the flight to Amsterdam leave?
AIRPORT TICKET AGENT: Departure time  is 11:35.
  2. International passengers should arrive at the airport at least two hours before departure time.
  3. Passengers can begin boarding 20 minutes before departure time.
  4. (an airline captain to his passengers)
Our arrival time  in Sydney should be around 7:30 a.m.
  5. (before leaving to pick up friends visiting from abroad)
a: When is Terry and Jack's flight getting to the airport, again?
b: They said 3:15, but let's call the airline to confirm the arrival time.

Bon Voyage!
